Working from home, quarantine increases domestic violence calls in Tennessee

Domestic violence calls are up 30 percent this year in Middle Tennessee in a year that has become increasingly perilous for victims.

Sparkle Johnson, a survivor of domestic violence and now victims’ advocate, says the loss of interpersonal interactions with friends, co-workers or family has meant that many victims are having to fight their battle alone.

“Those opportunities to sort of like have somebody else catch what’s going on have pretty much gone away. ,” Johnson said. “Everyone needs to standup and say, ‘hey I’m still here in some safe form or fashion.’”

Nashville’s Family Safety Center remains open, even on holidays, and the city has sustained its funding for its services even in a cash-strapped year. However, Diane Lance and her team have had to learn how to reach victims remotely or online. Now, they can even facilitate the retrieval of an order of protection over the phone.
