Nashville leaders set out 3 basic goals for the historic venue: increase revenues, increase usage and bring in more events. Tonight we take a look at their progress, as auditorium operators try to keep up with larger and newer venues. Elvis, Michael Jackson, Queen. All of them played at Municipal Auditorium in its heyday, but 51 years after opening its doors, the venue is struggling to draw big name performers. The winter months are the hardest. There isn’t another public ticket event on the schedule until January 10.Whether the seats are full or empty, the utility bills keep on coming. To increase the profile of the Municipal Auditorium, the city teamed up with the Musician’s Hall of Fame, which opened its museum on the first floor of the historic venue in August. The museum features a world class collection, but faces a literal uphill climb.Municipal is getting a lifeline next Spring after landing the brand new arena football franchise the Nashville Venom. So back to those city goals, a new football team with 6 scheduled home games promises to increase revenue and repeat events. The permanent museum promises to increase usage. Supporters say that’s proof the venue is worth the line on the city’s budget and the cost of the lights under the dome. The auditorium’s budget for this fiscal year is about a half million dollars less than last year. That’s because of a new system where the amount of money the auditorium generates in revenue is equal to the budget they receive from the city.
